Doon had been getting a lot of colds and flu. The doctor told us to go to a specialist to see about getting his tonsils out. Now I had read that the tonsillectomy is the most over-prescribed operation in the world, and I wasn't sure it was the right thing to do. But here in the Netherlands, there's no economic incentive to over-presecribe an operation, and when the doctor showed us how large and inflamed Doony's tonsils were and strongly urged that they be removed, we agreed. With some fear of course -- our baby was only 4 years old.

When Doon had his tonsils out we went to the hospital a few days before. The nurse showed him pictures of what was going to happen. She showed him the clothes that he would wear into the operating room. His daddy could wear the same clothes and go in with him until he went to sleep. The nurse showed him the mask that the doctor would put over his face before the operation that would make him go to sleep.

She showed him the tonsils they would snip out, and warned him that when he woke up he'd have a very sore throat. But the good part was that after the tonsillectomy he would get lots, and lots, of popsicles! That made Doony a lot less afraid of the operation.
